Somerset Youth Parliament seeks members

Somerset’s Youth Parliament is seeking nominations from young people aged 11 to 18. Would you like to stand to become a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP)?

11- to 18-year-olds who live in, or attend school or college in Somerset can put themselves forward. You would be the county’s next MYPs. To do this, you should complete a short online form available here www.somerset.gov.uk/myp You need to return the completed form by Friday 5 November.

Elections and voting will take place in December 2021. Newly elected MYPs take up their office on 1 March 2022 and serve a two-year term.

Three MYPs and three Deputies will be selected through a vote. All young people aged 11 to 18 living in Somerset will be invited to take part. Candidates will be invited to an ‘Election Speech Day’ event. This will be supported by Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council Leader. It is also supported by Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families.

Nationally, over 300 elected representatives work with central and local government. They ensure that young people’s voices are heard. Supported by Somerset County Council, Somerset MYPs campaign on a range of issues. They also advise, represent, give grants and are consulted by decision makers.

The selected young people will work alongside current MYPs and Deputies to learn their roles. They will create their campaign manifestos. They are offered training and development to fast-track their learning. They’ll get information about communication and understanding British values and democracy.
