Eric and the website spam/scam in Somerset

He may or may not be called Eric. He is certainly persistent. Actually “he” may not even be a “he”.

We have received a lot of emails from Eric over the last year. He targets website owners specifically. And these days lots of us have websites of our own. So Eric is trying to get your attention.

His opening gambit is always the same “My name’s Eric and I just found your site (fill in the name of the site in the gap here)”. It would be convincing the first time you get the email. Unfortunately Eric hasn’t grasped the fact that if you send out scam emails daily for a week, miss a week and then repeat ….. The odds are that you’ll twig that he hasn’t “just” come across your website.

He sometimes uses an email address with Eric in, but not always. Emails from “Eric” have come from several different addresses. This always strikes us at Leveller® Towers as fishy.

The messages may fall somewhere between spam and scam. But think about it. there are lots of local businesses in Somerset that can offer help with web design, social media and building internet traffic.

Do you need to do business with someone you never heard of, who doesn’t appear to be based in the UK? Someone who will provide the service online only? Once you’ve given away access to your site so it can be worked on, you are exposed.

To be safe, always use a local supplier.

Don’t give out access or payment details to anyone if you do not know the company or where they are from.

Don’t open links in an email unless you know the company or the person emailing you.
