Conservative by-election wins are not common these days at any level of government. So two on the same day in Somerset counts as something of an unusual event. Both by-elections were closely fought. The seat on Bridgwater Town Council for the Fairfax East ward was a straightforward old fashioned Labour/Conservative fight. In Highbridge the seat on Burnham and Highbridge town council proved to be a Conservative Lib/Dem contest in Highbridge.

74 Antony Nickolls (Lib Dem)
47 Pete Barnes (ind)
Over at Highbridge the result was:
179 Alistair Hendry (Con)
177 Laura Chalmers (Lib Dem
149 Kate Pearce (Lab)
