YEOVIL Town 2 – 1 Weston-super-Mare (Huish Park, February 20)
It must have felt like a gloved punch to the stomach for Scott Bartlett’s side.
They went behind within the first minute to league-leaders Yeovil Town, thanks to a well-timed run from Samuel Pearson.
Jacob Cane clawed back an equaliser, scoring in back-to-back league matches, but unlike last Saturday’s winner, this time it was to no avail.
Morgan Williams made it 2-1 after 82 minutes, redeeming himself for failing to clear a long ball that led to Cane’s chance, and the Seagulls were forced to make the trip back across Somerset defeated.
Despite this, the atmosphere remains positive for the newly promoted side.
In November and December, they won five on the bounce, including a 4-0 thumping of Worthing, who currently sit in second position.
While results have dipped since the new year, they sit a comfortable 10 points clear of relegation.
If they can continue their current form, fans will be happy with a successful first season back in the National League South.
Despite creating an abundance of goalscoring opportunities, 11 of their 23 league wins this season have come by a margin of just one goal.
Manager, Mark Cooper acknowledged this in the post-match press conference.
“The only thing that I’m a little bit peeved about is the fact that we create so many chances and we’re not putting them away at the moment,” he said.
“We’re having to rely on one or two goals when we should be scoring four.
“And that gives the opposition a chance.”
Despite this candour, only winning by one goal is a good problem to have.
The real test will come this Saturday, away to third-place Chelmsford, who are flying with three straight wins.
A fourth could see them move into second place, leading the charge in pursuit of the Glovers.
Morgan Williams added: “I needed [the goal] after the start.
“I didn’t play too well today, but the result is what matters and we got that.
“Today was probably my worst game possible, but credit to the players and the gaffer and all the staff who all backed me at half time.
“It’s not always going to be pretty; teams come back, they have a game plan, sit back against us so it’s hard to break them down.
“But we’re finding a way to win and that’s the most important thing.”
