A BRUTON-born candidate will be hoping to win a Somerset seat for Labour at the next general election.

Hal Hooberman has been selected as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the new constituency of Glastonbury and Somerton at the upcoming poll.

Hooberman was born, raised and went to state school in Bruton, and now works as a “parliamentary researcher for a senior Labour MP”, the party said.

According to the Register Of Interests Of Members’ Secretaries And Research Assistants published in 2023, that MP is Angela Eagle (Lab, Wallasey).

“It is a real honour to be Labour’s parliamentary candidate right here at home. Our beautiful part of Somerset means the world to me and my family,” he said.

“After 14 years of this Conservative Government, we have been left with crumbling public services, a cost of living crisis, and nothing but sleaze and scandal from the top.

“As your Labour Member of Parliament, I will champion sustainable farming, our rural economy and hold water companies to account for their illegal sewage discharges into our rivers.”

He added: “I am determined to be the energetic, passionate voice that makes sure my home and our beautiful part of Somerset benefits from a transformative Labour Government.”

He faces stiff competition in the newly-created seat, however, with current Somerton & Frome MP, Sarah Dyke, running for the Lib Dems.

She was elected in July last year in a by-election following the resignation of Conservative, David Warburton.

For the Conservatives, Somerset Councillor Faye Purbrick – who came second to Ms Dyke in that by-election, will once again hope to secure the seat.
