Yeovil Town secures safety – but the future remains unclear

RELEGATION is no longer on the cards for Yeovil Town, but the club faces an uncertain future – both on and off the pitch.

Despite 10-man Yeovil Town falling to a 1-0 defeat away to Eastleigh yesterday (April 21), results elsewhere confirmed the club has retained its status in the Vanarama National League for the 2025/2026 season.

The Glovers currently sit in 15th place on 56 points with just two games left to play.

While the dizzying heights of the promotion play-off spots may seem like a world away (10 points in total), fans will be hoping it will be their time to shine next season.

The club received promotion to the National League after winning the National League South title at the end of the 2023/24 season, so a mid-table finish is respectable given context.

However, fans are hoping that a change in ownership could translate into seeing even more positive results on the pitch.

The Glovers, who enjoyed a 16-year stay in the English Football League (EFL), were taken over by the Hellier Group in May 2023 following a turbulent period which saw them relegated from the National League.

But following the announcement last month that owner Martin Hellier is stepping away from the club following “negative remarks” directed at him on social media, the future of the club remains uncertain.

Some fans who posted negative comments online were also reportedly banned from attending Yeovil Town matches, sketching a dark picture of the behind-the-scenes as the Somerset club.

Stuart Robbins took over as interim chairman when Hellier announced his departure. Speaking to BBC Radio Somerset, he said Hellier will continue to invest in the National League club until a new buyer is found.

Accounts for the 2023/24 season show that the club has racked up debts totalling £2.8 million, and Robins told the BBC that new investment was “absolutely critical”.

While new owners have not been announced, some fans are hoping the ownership situation can be resolved quickly to allow the club to properly prepare for the new season.

A Glovers fan, who asked to remain anonymous given the banning orders being dished out to some fans, which included the club’s unofficial podcast Gloverscast, said: “We need new owners as soon as possible so we can put the off-pitch mess of the current ownership behind us and try and progress to the EFL.

“While I can appreciate him stepping in when he did and helping steady the ship, we need someone who is just going to get on with the job rather than responding to fans late at night on social media.”

They added: “We have potential, and we need someone to help realise this.

“Massive thanks to Mark Cooper and the boys for helping us stay in the league for one more season – but we now have the chance to properly build on this success.

“There was so much positivity around the club when Hellier first came in, but this has turned to dust, and we’re exactly back where we were before – worrying about the future of the club.

“If we don’t get new owners soon, why would players want to join us when there could be wholesale changes?”

The club’s next game is against Sutton United at Huish Park on Saturday (April 26) at 3pm.
