Work underway on 16 social rent homes in Somerset town

WORK is underway on more than a dozen eco-friendly, affordable homes in Weston-super-Mare.

Housing association, Alliance Homes, is developing 16 properties at Woodside View, on the outskirts of the town, for social rent.

The firm said the homes are designed with “sustainability at their core” to provide “warm, efficient living for local people in housing need”.

Each property is being built to achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) A rating, and will feature air-source heat pumps, solar panels, high-performance insulation and electric vehicle charging points.

The project is being completed with residential developer, Edenstone, through partnership working with North Somerset Council and grant funding from Homes England.

To mark the start of construction, representatives from Alliance Homes and Edenstone gathered on site, joined by Hutton and Locking ward councillor Terry Porter.

Alliance Homes’ new homes project manager, Jade Hitchcock, said: “We’re proud to bring more homes to North Somerset. With more than 3,000 households waiting for an affordable home locally, our ambition to deliver 2,000 new homes by 2033 will play an important part in meeting that demand and helping more local people and families access secure, well-built affordable housing.

“This development in Weston shows how, by working together with local partners and with funding support from Homes England, we can unlock smaller plots and bring them forward for affordable housing.”

Cllr Porter said: “I’m delighted to see work beginning on this much‑needed development, which represents a substantial investment in our area.

“With demand for affordable housing at an all‑time high, it’s reassuring to see partners working together to deliver high‑quality homes that will make a real difference to residents.”

And Edenstone’s partnership delivery director, Dominic Blake, added: “It’s fantastic to break ground on this development. We’re proud to be working with Alliance Homes to deliver modern, affordable homes that meet the needs of the community both now and in the future.”

Homes at Woodside View are expected to be ready for Alliance customers from January 2027 and will be allocated through North Somerset Council’s HomeChoice lettings scheme.
