Work underway on £123,000 village community centre revamp

WORK to renovate a community centre serving two Somerset villages is progressing – thanks to more than £123,000 in Lottery funding.

Trustees at the Charltons Memorial Community Trust – which covers Charlton Adam and Charlton Mackrell – say “significant progress” has been made to progress work on replacing the centre’s roof, installing new windows, fire exit doors and solar panels.

The work has been funded by a successful bid to the National Lottery Community Fund, which has seen £123,365 donated over two years.

This sum, with other grants from The Charltons Parish Council, donations from organisations and fundraising activities in the village, had made “a long-held dream a reality, giving the village a fresh, warm and safe facility to build community cohesion”, a spokesperson said, and work was set to begin on the roof on October 13.

“This week marked an exciting milestone for all who use and love our local hub, when contractors arrived on site to prepare for the build,” they said.

“The whole is expected to take five weeks, and the works are progressing swiftly and on schedule, thanks to the hard work of everyone involved.”

The main contractors for the project are S2G Ltd, Starks Electrical Limited, Yeovil Windows and Conservatories, and R4 Scaffolding.
