Work underway ahead of residents’ permit parking trial in Weston-super-Mare

WORK is underway ahead of the launch of a new resident’s parking scheme pilot in Weston-Super-Mare.

North Somerset Council’s Highways team has begun drawing lines and installing signs on roads between Alfred Street and Ashcombe Road, which will see permit parking introduced.

Leader of NSC, Cllr Mike Bell (Lib Dem, Weston Central), spoke of a few points as the work began, and said: “This is a pilot. The council will be monitoring how it operates in practice and will need to adapt where things are not working as intended.

“It will not be perfect, especially at the start, but it is a genuine attempt to improve residents’ ability to park outside or near their homes, while still balancing the needs of local businesses, workers and visitors.

“Permits are expected to be available from February 2026. Numbers will be capped initially, with a waiting list if demand is higher than the available space.

“During the lining and signing works there will be short-term disruption, including keep-clear cones, limited access at times, and possible vehicle relocation if required to complete the works. “Please keep an eye on local on-street signage and, if you can, plan ahead on the day works are happening in your road.”

He added: “My hope is that, if the pilot proves effective, it can be expanded to other parts of the town centre and off the seafront where residents’ parking is heavily impacted.

“Please share your experiences once it goes live, what is working, and what needs changing, so I can feed real evidence back as the scheme is monitored and refined.”

Residents may also purchase a permit that allows them to park in Locking Road car park. This will be priced at £90 per year.

Residents may purchase an unlimited number of these permits.

North Somerset Council said it reserves the right to cap the number of permits if there is evidence that the available on-street parking is over-subscribed.

If this is necessary, a waiting list will be operated. Resident permits will be offered to households in chronological order from the date of the application being received.

As a resident within this area I don’t think many residents are happy about it. Another cash generating scheme by north somerset council.
