WATCH: MP raises Yeovil hospital maternity closure with the Prime Minister

MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) raised the sudden announcement of maternity services at the town hospital being shut for six months during PMQs this afternoon (May 14).

The Yeovil MP asked Sir Keir Starmer if he would meet to discuss the move – which came after a damning CQC report on the hospital’s maternity services in January – and “stop this decision”.

Mr Dance asked: “Will the PM or relative Minister agree to meet with me and colleagues in the south west to stop this decision?”

The Prime Minister responded: “I’m grateful to him for raising this issue, which must be of concern.

“I’m not across the details of it I’m afraid at this stage but I will make sure he gets a meeting with the relevant minister to get to the bottom of the issue that he’s described.”

As well as quizzing the PM on the decision in Parliament, the MP has also launched a petition calling for action over the closure, which a number of county MPs have called ‘concerning’ and ‘alarming’.
