‘Vital’ work at Wellington reservoir aims to protect homes from flooding

‘VITAL’ works are set to begin next month to protect Wellington homes from flooding.

The work, to repair the crest beam of the Westford Reservoir, will protect households in the area from flooding, Wellington Town Council said.

Properties face a one-in-50 chance of flooding, the council said, with the crest beam reducing the risk of failure of the Category A large, raised reservoir.

The existing 60m concrete beam and a section of Dycell matt, a concrete revetment underneath grass, will be broken out and replaced.

The Environment Agency said work is set to begin around July 21, and will take around six weeks.

“This will not require the closure of any public right of way,” the council said. “There will be haulage trucks needing to access the site, but this will be kept to a minimum and during reasonable hours in line with the contractor’s traffic management plan.”
