Views wanted over road safety plans for Wrington

A SERIES of safety improvements have been proposed to make a road in a Somerset village safer for children and pedestrians.

The route between Orchard Close and Wrington Primary School sees a lot of foot traffic at various times of the day, with cars often congested in the area due to the narrow road and cars parking on-street.

North Somerset Council has devised a series of safety improvements designed to make pedestrian movement and active travel safer and more accessible- and it wants to hear from residents, parents, commuters, businesses and community groups in the area.

Proposed changes include:

· Staggered buildouts in the road to reduce traffic speeds near the school and between South Meadows and Orchard Close.

· A virtual footway including a 1.5 metre resin-surfaced path to improve pedestrian access.

· Improved crossings, including dropped kerbs and tactile paving for safer access across the road.

· High-quality planters to enhance pedestrian protection and maintain reduced traffic speeds.

· Parking restrictions to ensure clear, safe routes for all users.

· Signage and bus stop adjustments to support the other changes and improve overall usability.

Councillor Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for sustainable travel, said: “We hope these proposals will make it safer for children and parents travelling to and from school in Wrington.

“By slowing traffic and reducing congestion in key areas we can provide better pedestrian access for all, including those with mobility challenges and create a more welcoming environment that encourages active travel.”

Cllr Thomas Daw, North Somerset Council’s ward member for Wrington added: “School Road and its safety affects almost every resident in Wrington.

“It is vital that residents get that chance to comment on the council proposal and help shape our village.

“Getting a full consultation was something I set out to do from day one of becoming Wrington’s councillor and I am so glad to be able to help present Wrington with this opportunity. I encourage all residents to put forward their views.

“If anyone has any questions or comments, please do contact me.”

Visit the North Somerset Council website to comment on the proposals.

The consultation is open until 12 noon on January 17.
