TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known Yeovil tax driver who has passed away at the age of 54.
Norel Scortea arrived in the UK from Romania in 2016 – in the aftermath of Brexit referendum.
But while the vote may have divided the nation, it garnered a passion for his new home in Norel.
As a young man Norel lived through the collapse of communism in Romania.
He completed his academic studies in 1996 with a degree in Energetics from Bucharest University.
Later, he embraced the West and capitalism, finding success in a number of business ventures, most prominently as an advertising executive.
He travelled to New York on secondment with Ogilvy, read for a masters degree in Environmental Law on his return to Romania, but eventually settled on England’s particular style of liberty.
Continuing his education, he was set to commence his studies at the University of Law, in Bristol, next month.
A friend said he passed away on August 15 in Yeovil.
“Many of us in Yeovil will have felt warmth in our hearts as we saw the bright lights of Norel’s taxi rise up the road to meet us,” the tribute said.
“A taxi ride with Norel was unlike any other. He will be remembered for his generosity, his accuracy of speech, the depths of his counsel, and his all too human heart.
“Soon, Norel will begin his final journey back to his homeland and his family, including his daughter, Ayana.
“He will depart with the support of the local community, and a collection in his memory.”
Norel’s employer, Radio Cabs, has organised a collection for his family. Contact them on 01935 426666.
