TRIBUTES have been paid to Merlin – the Glastonbury Wizard – who has passed away aged 77.
Ray Rutter, who was often to be found in the town centre in his famous blue robes and wizards hat, was a popular member of the community.
Residents, visitors and more have taken to social media to pay tribute to the town stalwart.
“I’m shocked and deeply saddened this evening to read of the passing of our ‘Merlin’,” said David Greenway, former Glastonbury town crier. “He really was very much a part of the furniture of Glastonbury.
“We always shared jokes and stories whenever we encountered each other in the town.
“His friendliness, kindness, generosity and warmth were spread so widely and so freely. RIP Ray.”
The Normal for Glastonbury account said: “I’m very sad to hear the news that Raymond ‘Merlin’ Rutter has passed on. Ray was a familiar sight as Glastonbury’s street wizard and a hugely popular member of the community.
“He was a volunteer and fundraiser for the ‘Love Glastonbury’ Community Fridge and always had a warm smile and a friendly greeting for all.”
And countless residents and visitors shared their experiences chatting and posing for pictures with Merlin.
“A beautiful, gentle soul. Travel well and arrive safely my friend,” said one.
Another wrote: “Very sad news – always there with a smile and kind word – sending love and light to his friends and family at this time.”

I am deeply saddened by these news.
Before we even moved here, we talked to him every time we visited. He made us smile, and not one visit was complete before giving him a hug.
After moving to Glastonbury we got even closer to him, we talked way too many times about meeting up outside his amazing role as Merlin.
But us humans believe we have all the time in the world.
We don’t.
Rest in peace, you amazing human being.
You’ll be sorely missed 💙
“Always believe in magic, Brother!”
I will, “Ray”. I promise.
So sad to hear of Raymond’s passing. He was a legend in the Town and when I filled the Community Fridge he was always there. The money he made from doing his runes he contributed to Love Glastonbury. A beautiful, kind and generous spirit who will be missed by so many.
So very sad to loose someone that gives so much to the community
Sending love and hugs to his family xx
Could anyone tell me if Merlin ( Raymond ) of Glastonbury pass away Thursday late morning please?
Not just a great, conspicuous and wholesome presence in Glastonbury in his daring blue robes and pointed hat, but an excellent rune reader as well. I consulted him once. He didn’t know ANYTHING about me. But the interpretation of the three runes I blindly chose, was Spot On, and did me a lot of good, which I really needed at that moment. He was never in it for the money,
Absolutely adored Ray. Part and parcel of Glastonbury living. My nieces visit wasn’t complete without a hug from Merlin.
So sad knowing he has passed.
Rest in love Brother.
You made home magical.
His uplifting energy and beautiful soul will be missed. He always said hello and brought sunshine to everyone. The world needs more kind people like him. So sad to hear he has gone.
