Tributes paid to hero Somerset police dog Fred following death

A SOMERSET police dog who led an adventurous life has sadly died.

Fred – an explosive search dog at Avon and Somerset Police – won the hearts of many.

Known as The Colonel, “incredible” Fred got to experience many different events throughout his long career.

“He was deployed to Northern Ireland, served at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, and had the honour of searching Westminster Abbey on the evening of Her Majesty’s funeral,” an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“Along with his handler, sergeant Dalrymple, they were constant supporters of the WAGs charity that aids police dogs across Avon and Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

“Together they raised money for the charity by completing the Three Peaks, including Ben Nevis, as well as abseiling our Comms tower at Headquarters with TV presenter Alex Lovell.

“We will remember Fred for his dedicated service to our communities, but also the loyal companionship to his family. Rest in peace, ‘The Colonel’.”
