Temporary library opening in Bridgwater after roof damage forced closure

BOOK lovers in Bridgwater will have to visit a temporary library after the closure of the main facility for work to repair a damaged roof.

The interior ceiling of the Binford Place library was damaged due to roof problems, leading to the temporary closure last month.

Now, Somerset Council is opening a temporary facility at Bridgwater House, in Kings Square.

“Work is ongoing to urgently repair the roof long-term and ensure the building is fit for purpose for many years to come,” a spokesperson said.

The temporary library will open on Monday (December 1), offering book borrowing and returns, public computer access, and some events.

Access to the library will be from the rear of the building, via Northgate, between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

There is no parking on the site, with visitors able to park in the Northgate pay and display car park nearby, or in the Aldi car park.

Pick up and drop off for disabled customers is the lay-by on Northgate.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council lead member for communities, housing and culture, said: “Bridgwater Library is a vital resource for the community, so we are really pleased to be able to provide this temporary base while the original building is repaired.

“Our main focus is of course to get the library building up and running as soon as we possibly can.”
