A SCHEME to replace ‘defective’ homes in Taunton has won an award.
Phase A of the North Taunton Woolaway Project (NTWP) has won Insider’s South West Residential Property Award for affordable housing.
The scheme saw homes built in the mid-20th century using prefabricated reinforced concrete – which were deemed defective by an Act of Parliament in 1984 – demolished and replaced.
And on April 18, at an awards night in Exeter the Taunton scheme was crowned the winner, against seven other shortlisted projects.
Judges were impressed with the high level of community engagement, alongside impressive tenant feedback.
The project has also been shortlisted for Michelmores Property Awards for Residential Project of the Year (36 homes and over).
Somerset Council submitted applications for both awards earlier this year, which included a tour of the NTWP site for judges of the Michelmores award.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, lead member for communities, housing and culture, said: “We’re grateful the NTWP has been shortlisted for these regional awards, and we’re incredibly honoured to win the Affordable Housing Award.
“The homes we’ve built not only provide residents with high-quality, affordable housing but balance sustainability and innovation.
“The properties are designed to care for the environment whilst benefitting the local community long term.
“Winning against seven other worthy projects is something the team and I are very proud of and is testament to their hard work and dedication.”
Elsewhere at the awards, the Paddock Rise development, in Nailsea, scooped the Boutique Development of the Year gong, while Ryves Vale, at Tickenham, North Somerset, won the Sustainability and Social Impact title.
The results of the Michelmores awards will be revealed on June 27.
