Taunton school announces new theatre and dining hall expansion plans

PYRLAND School In Taunton has announced plans for a new theatre and a larger dining area.

The new facilities will “accommodate an increase in pupil numbers” at the school – formerly Taunton Academy – with work getting underway in the Easter holidays.

The new event space is set to have a capacity of 240 people, with completion set for October this year.

The scheme will see the current hall converted into a new eating area, with added servery sections, which will be ready when pupils return to school in September.

There will also be improved security fencing installed at the rear of the playing field.

Since the end of March the school has been supported in its next stage of development by the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership, a trust with more than 40 schools, including primary, secondary, sixth form and a number of special schools.

Mark Lawrence, currently head teacher of Buckler’s Mead Academy in Yeovil, has been appointed executive head and will lead both schools.

“Since arriving, the staff and students here at Pyrland have been incredibly welcoming to me and my trust colleagues,” he said.

“They are a credit to the school and their families.

“This is a much anticipated project for the school and the investment will improve our facilities still further.

“The building development is an exciting move which will provide additional indoor space, allowing performing arts to flourish.

“The much-needed improvements to eating areas will be very welcome for the whole school community.”
