SEVEN new apartments could be created if plans to extend the second floor of a landmark Minehead building are approved.
A planning application by Inspired Partnership Ltd, on behalf of Williton-based 599 Developments Ltd, has been submitted to Somerset Council for 1C The Avenue.
The scheme would see the building – which currently houses shops on the ground floor, nine dwellings on the first floor, and two more on the second floor – altered to extend the second floor.
The extension of the second floor would be a ‘mansard’ structure – which has sloping roofs.

New properties would have a covered access to the rear of the property, while ‘minor alterations’ would be carried out internally to provide cycle and bin storage.
“The proposal, as part of this submission, shall afford the applicant with the opportunity to provide high-quality residential accommodation to guests who wish to reside in a central location within the Minehead high street, and in close proximity to a wealth of local amenities and facilities,” the application said.

It would be a “sympathetic addition” that would have “negligible harm to its setting”, it added.
There are no changes planned to access for the current building, with minor alterations to external lighting, the plans said.
