Road re-opens after 17-month closure following wall collapse

A NORTH Somerset road which closed after a wall collapsed has re-opened – after 17 months.

Hutton Hill Road, in Hutton, was closed in February 2024 for safety reasons after a wall in a private garden collapsed, making it unsafe for traffic.

North Somerset Council worked with the property owners to enable them to resolve the matter as quickly as possible,” a council spokesperson said.

“The council closed the road after the structural collapse to avoid any further damage to nearby properties and to protect road users from falling stone.”

They said the work were the responsibility of the property owners and took time to repair due to “the complexity of the situation”.

Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for roads, said she was pleased the road was open again.

“We appreciate this lengthy closure has been inconvenient for residents and road users but there was no alternative due to the extensive structural damage to the wall,” she said.

“We have worked with the owners to provide as much support and advice as we could but appreciate that this was a lengthy process.”

Cllr Mike Solomon, ward member for Hutton and Locking, added: “We had to put safety first and that unfortunately meant a lengthy road closure.

“I am delighted that the road is open again and traffic is no longer diverted through other parts of the village.”
