Richard Breed in court charged with murdering Brenda Breed in Westonzoyland

RICHARD Breed has appeared in court charged with the murder of Brenda Breed in Westonzoyland.

Richard, 62, appeared at Taunton Deane Magistrates’ Court following the death of 87-year-old Brenda at a property in Monmouth Close on Tuesday (July 22).

Police said although no official identification of Brenda had taken place, they believe her to be the deceased.

Her family said: “There are no words to describe the pain and devastation which has rippled through our family, friends and the community from the loss of such a remarkable and much-loved woman.”

At the hearing today (July 24) Richard, of no fixed abode, was remanded into custody by magistrates pending an appearance at Bristol Crown Court on Friday (July 25). He did not enter a plea.

The charge came after police officers were called to a home in Monmouth Close at 9.17am on July 22 by neighbours concerned for the welfare of the female occupant.

“Sadly, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with (the family) and they continue to be supported by dedicated family liaison officers. They thank the community for their support and ask for their privacy to be respected.

“Residents will still see an increased police presence as the Major Crime Investigation Team’s enquiries continue, and officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team will also be in the area offering help and support.

“If you have any relevant information and have yet to speak with officers, please get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 5225206357.

A book of condolence has been opened at St Mary’s Church, in Westonzoyland, where Brenda was a “long-standing” parishioner.

“Brenda was a joy to be with and was always concerned for the welfare of others,” a church spokesperson said.

“She will be greatly missed,” they added. “We hold all who are affected in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”

She will also be remembered at the Sunday service, they said, which begins at 10.30am on July 27, where the Archdeacon of Taunton will give an address.
