Plans to replace fire-hit home near Bridgwater submitted

PLANS have been submitted to demolish and replace a house near Puriton badly damaged by fire.

The property, on the A39 at Puriton Hill, caught fire in a blaze at around 9pm on November 15, 2023, with firefighters at the time saying it suffered 80% damage.

Now, the Lyndon Brett Partnership, on behalf of Kevin Palmer, have applied to Somerset Council for permission to demolish the damaged structure and replace it with a ‘like-for-like’ property.

The application said “the house has been damaged by the fire, but the walls could technically be retained”.

“Asbestos removal works have taken place which include much of the pitched roof covering,” it went on.

An existing garage and other structures on the site would be unaffected by the proposed scheme, which would see a detached, one-and-a-half-storey home built.

“The proposed dwelling will be a like for like replacement of the existing building other than the removal of the chimney breast and fireplace, minor internal alterations to the layout and an access ramp to the front elevation to improve access for wheelchair users,” the plans added.

The scheme will now be considered by Somerset Council planners. For more details, visit somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 04/25/00002.
