Plans to convert former Somerset pub into a family home submitted

A LANDMARK pub building near Frome could be set to become a home, if plans are approved.

A planning application has been submitted by Class Architecture, on behalf of Caitlin Rhodes, to convert the former Hungerford Arms, in Trowbridge Road, Farleigh Hungerford, into a family home.

The application said the proposals – which incorporate plans approved in November 2021 – would remove some later additions to the grade II-listed property, and add extensions more sympathetic and in-keeping with the historic structure.

“Generally, the proposed concept remains to remove harmful 20th century-built portions to the rear elevation of the Hungerford Arms, and introduce new extensions in their place that are carefully designed to be befitting of the listed building,” it said.

“These new additions have been detailed to preserve the original building while introducing open-plan living spaces at ground floor level that are ideal for a family home.”

As well as changes to the main building, it is proposed new garages with lofts will be built, on the former site of stabling at the inn.

The application said there was little left of those stables.

“All that is left of this structure is a car park ‘plinth’, on which it is thought that this stabling was positioned,” it said.

“The stabling would have appeared as ancillary to the pub.

“Today, there is a larger car park positioned to the north of this ‘plinth’. It is set at a lower level to follow the natural topography of the site, and it is at this level that it is proposed to construct the new garaging with loft.”

When a previous application to convert the venue to housing, a campaign was launched against it by locals.
