Plans for “much-improved” skatepark in Wells revealed

PLANS to redevelop Wells Skatepark to create a “new and much-improved” facility have been submitted.

An application by Salmon Planning Company has been handed in to Somerset Council on behalf of Wells City Council and the Wells Skatepark Community Group.

It details plans to replace the 20-year-old skatepark, off Lovers’ Walk, near the Waitrose car park, which is “ageing and out of date”.

“Many ramps have recently been removed as they are no longer fit for purpose,” it said. “The area is currently a Tarmac surface with metal and wooden ramps – the wear and tear on the wooden ramps is proving costly for the council and is becoming unsustainable.

“The area is also unusable for wheels such as roller skates or younger learners because of the rough damaged Tarmac.

“The whole park is also on a slope which poses additional safety risk, particularly to younger learners.”

The plans aim to “update and modernise the park”, “raising the standard so it can be fit for purpose and more inclusive”, it went on.

An improved facility would not only be a boost for skaters, the application said, but also to businesses and the community in Wells.

“It is anticipated that the redeveloped skatepark would contribute significantly to the local economy, becoming one of the major attractions of Wells, particularly for younger skaters and their families,” it said.

It said the skatepark would be “a catalyst for social connection, physical and mental well-being, and creative expression”.
