Plans for 150 homes on fields in Somerset village revealed

PLANS for 150 new homes in a Somerset village have been submitted.

The scheme, for land off Broadway Hill, in Horton near Ilminster, have been submitted to Somerset Council by Gleeson Land.

Outline plans detail the proposal, which includes 35% affordable housing, also includes a play area and a potential expansion of Horton Playing Field.

A proposed section 106 agreement, which sees developers contribute to infrastructure improvements, would see money handed over for education/healthcare provision.

The site, measuring some 14 hectares, is currently used for agricultural purposes, bound by Broadway Hill to the north and the A303 to the south, on the edge of Horton.

A public presentation of the plans was held with villagers in July, when residents gave their views on the proposals, with more than 700 letters also sent to village households.

Access to the development would come from Broadway Hill, the application said, with the homes sitting alongside the nearby Channells Lane scheme.

“A key element of the design approach is to include open greenspace, ecological enhancements and recreational use across the western, southern and south-eastern portions of the application site,” it said.

“This will provide large areas for both local and existing residents to enjoy, while also enhancing biodiversity.”

Trees along the boundaries of the site would be retained, the plans said, with a play area created alongside new planting.
