Plans for 117 new homes in North Somerset revealed

PLANS have been submitted for more than 100 new houses in Weston-super-Mare.

Gladman Developments has applied to North Somerset Council (NSC) for permission to develop a 6.74-hectare site off Elm Grove, Locking, building up to 117 new properties.

The two-field plot is bordered by housing to the east and north-east, with a campsite to the west, and a static home park to the north-west and was identified by NSC in a draft local plan.

The outline application said the development would provide “a choice of new homes”, including starter homes for first-time buyers, retirement homes, including 30% affordable homes, with the housing mix to be “determined at the detailed stage” with “a broad range of house types”.

Previous applications for the site include plans for 145 dwellings, which were refused, and another for 110 dwellings refused after an appeal in November 2019.

As well as the homes, the application outlines plans for 3.5 hectares of “green infrastructure”, including a children’s play area, walking routes and a community orchard.

Access to the development would come from Elm Grove, with pedestrian and cycle access from South Lawn.

“Overall, the proposals demonstrate a sustainable development, in a suitable
location,” the application added.

“The scheme offers a range of benefits, including making a significant contribution towards the market and affordable housing needs of the North Somerset authority area.”
