Plan to merge Bridgwater and Taunton College with Strode College

BRIDGWATER and Taunton College (BTC) has announced plans to merge with Strode College in what is being described as a “significant step” towards enhancing educational services for students in the area.

The proposed merger has a planned target date of 2025 and is subject to due diligence and final approval from the Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson (Lab/Houghton and Sunderland South).

The move, which was unanimously agreed by both colleges’ boards of governors, would create a new group structure which would allow both BTC and Strode College to maintain their individual ethos and identities while also benefiting from centralised support.

A spokesperson for both BTC and Strode College said the collaboration will improve student experiences, offer enhanced opportunities for staff, employers, and the wider community, and ensure financial sustainability for both institutions.

“By bringing together two high-performing colleges, we can strengthen the educational landscape for the communities we serve,” said Andy Berry CBE, principal and CEO of BTC.

“Our collective capabilities will enable us to unlock new opportunities for students, employers, and staff alike.”

Dr John Revill, principal and CEO of Strode College, said: “We look forward to collaborating with our stakeholders throughout this transformative process and working together to shape a prosperous future for education in our region.”
