THE start of work on Somerset’s first co-housing project in 26 years will be marked at an event next month.
The development, near South Petherton, is “a major milestone in sustainable and affordable living”, according to the Bridge Farm Co-Housing Corporation, which has worked on the scheme, backed by Somerset Council.
Co-housing aims to provide affordable housing “in a diverse, supportive community”, with the Somerset scheme featuring repurposed farm buildings alongside new properties.
There are only five homes remaining on the site near South Petherton, which will be on display during an open weekend planned at the site on March 8 and 9 ahead of ground being broken.

“After four years of hard work, collaboration and dedication, the co-housing project is just months away from breaking ground, with construction expected to take approximately two years,” a spokesperson said.
“The project’s success has been made possible thanks to incredible support from Somerset Council, forward thinking local landowners, and social impact investment from Resonance.
“Together, they have demonstrated what is achievable when passionate individuals unite to prioritise affordability and community over conventional housing developments.”
They said the development was about “more than just affordable homes” and aimed to create “a thriving, inclusive community”.
“By sharing resources and caring for the land, residents will experience a sense of connection and purpose often missing in traditional housing developments,” the spokesperson went on.
“The project actively seeks diversity and encourages people from all walks of life to consider joining.
“With only five homes remaining, this is a rare opportunity to become part of a pioneering community.”
Julian Brooks, co-founder of Bridge Farm, said: “It’s been a long road, and this project has been a true collaboration with Somerset Council, social impact finance, and local businesses and landowners backing the venture. We’re creating a model for affordable housing that will remain accessible in perpetuity.”
He added: “This project shows what can happen when people come together with a shared vision of creating an affordable, sustainable community.
“It’s been an incredible journey, and we can’t wait to see it come to life. We hope this inspires other groups to explore similar models of housing.”
Tours of the site will take place at 2pm on Saturday, March 8 and at 11am on Sunday, March 9. For more details on Bridge Farm Co-Housing, see https://bridgefarmcohousing.community.
