HIS music might be the ultimate pop Marmite – you either love it or hate it – but you can’t fault James Blunt’s social media game.
The star, famed for hits including You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Love – has achieved cult status for his witty responses on social media, primarily in replies to criticism.
Now, he has taken things a step further, in pledging to legally change his name to whatever proves the most popular suggestion on Twitter/X.
The stunt comes as his debut album, back to bedlam, is re-released, two decades after it became the best selling album of the year in 2005 – thanks largely to the success of single, You’re Beautiful.

Announcing the move in a fittingly-funny social media video, Blunt said: “My name is James Blunt, and you have the power to absolutely f@#k my life.
“I know you’ve heard the rumours and they’re true. I’m re-releasing my debut album Back to bedlam on October 11. Something that has kept me consistently rich for the past 20 years.
“So, as a way to give back to you, my adoring public, if Back to Bedlam re-enters the charts at number one, I will legally change my name.
“What will I change it to? Well, that’s entirely up to you.”

He goes on: “I’ve been called many things in my life – Most hated man in pop; Annoying; James Beige … I’ll let the people decide.
“But if it doesn’t go to number one, I’m not changing my name.
“It’s safe to say, this is the most important democratic moment of the year.”
It comes, of course, in a year which has seen a general election in the UK, with the US Presidential Election taking place in November.
Back to Bedlam has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide and is being re-released on October 11.
