CLARE Hunt is the new chair of North Somerset Council.
Cllr Hunt, a Labour representative for Nailsea Youngwood, was elected at a Full Council meeting on Tuesday (May 13).
She replaces Cllr Peter Crew, with Cllr Caritas Charles (Portishead Independent Group, Portishead East) elected vice-chair, taking over from Cllr Hunt, with the roles given a non-political denomination.
After the meeting, Cllr Hunt said it was a “privilege to be elected”.
“I’m looking forward to the year ahead, meeting local people, attending charity and civic events on behalf of the council and championing local interests,” she said.
“I hope to make a positive difference wherever I can and my aims for the year ahead are to promote the wonderful area of North Somerset and particularly my hometown of Nailsea where I have personally received so much help and support.”

The role of chair sees the incumbent assume a range of duties on behalf of the council, including attending events.
Cllr Crew said the role had led to “one of the greatest years of my political career”.
“My passion has always been to support our local economy and tourism, and I’ve enjoyed promoting North Somerset and the wonderful place we live in to communities and visitors during the last year,” he said.
“There are too many highlights to name, but some events that have particularly stood out for me include attending the Armed Forces Day and St George’s Day Parade.”
