MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington) has met with rail chiefs over the crossing where teenager Harry Basham tragically lost his life.
Harry, 17, passed away on the 5/13 pedestrian rail crossing, around a mile east of Taunton Station, in October last year.
The tragedy prompted a petition calling for improved safety measures, or closure, of the crossing point, with more than 3,500 backing the campaign.
In response, MP Mr Amos said he planned to meet Network Rail officials to discuss what could be done at the crossing.
After meeting officials last week, Mr Amos said: “My meeting with Network Rail was very constructive.
“Useful data provided tells us that this crossing is crossed on foot about 35 times on an average day, which Network Rail do not consider heavy usage.
“However, local pedestrians are important to me and I asked whether there could be a red light to warn pedestrians of oncoming trains but, due to the sets of points nearby, that technology would not work here.
“I’ve asked them to look at convenient alternative ways to cross the railway on foot and, most importantly, for consultation before any decision is taken for this crossing to be closed or kept open.
“I’m keen to keep focused on how we can make this crossing safer for all concerned.”

Can we educate people not to cross railway lines when wearing headphones? Also, maybe we could educate people to stop, look and listen?
