PASSENGER access at Yeovil Junction station looks set to improve thanks to government funding.
The station has been given the go-ahead for its Access For All scheme, with detailed design work now set to begin – ahead of a final decision over the full programme of improvements to lifts and a footbridge.
Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said the decision marked an important milestone for inclusive transport in the county.
He said: “This is very welcome news for Yeovil and the many people who rely on Yeovil Junction to travel for work, education and leisure.
“Improving accessibility at our stations is a vital step forward if we want our transport network to work for everyone, particularly people with disabilities, reduced mobility, parents with buggies and older residents.”
The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed Yeovil Junction as one of 31 stations across the country that will receive funding to progress the detailed designs.
Cllr Wilkins said at this stage, funding has been confirmed for detailed design only, with a final decision on construction dependent on the outcome of that work.
He added: “While there are no guarantees at this point, early feasibility studies have not raised any major concerns, and we remain optimistic.
“We will continue to work closely with Network Rail, South Western Railway and the Department for Transport to make the strongest possible case for delivery.”
MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) also welcomed the news.
He said: “This is a positive step for disabled people, older residents, parents with pushchairs and anyone who finds the station hard to use.
“Since being elected, I have been pushing for better access at our local stations, and I am pleased to see progress.
“There is more work to do to make these changes happen, and I will keep pressing for Yeovil Junction to be accessible for everyone.”
