Homophobic abuse claim that saw Somerset football match abandoned found ‘not proven’

A PROBE into alleged homophobic abuse during a football match between Somerset clubs has found the allegation ‘not proven’.

In September, a match between Axbridge United and Chew Magna was abandoned at half time after a player claimed he had been the victim of homophobic abuse.

The allegation, against an Axbridge player, was investigated by the Somerset FA – which has found it not proven.

Responding to the news, Axbridge United FC said in a statement: “Following recent allegations made by Chew Magna FC regarding alleged homophobic abuse during our fixture earlier this season, Axbridge United FC would like to address the matter directly.

“The club fully cooperated with the Somerset FA throughout their investigation into the incident.

“After a full hearing and careful review of all available evidence and witness statements, the charges against Axbridge United FC and our captain were found, beyond reasonable probability, not proven.

“We welcome the FA’s conclusion, which confirms that no such language or behaviour took place from any Axbridge United player.

“Axbridge United FC takes all allegations of discrimination and abuse extremely seriously. We are proud to uphold the values of respect, inclusivity, and fair play both on and off the pitch.

“We now consider this matter closed and remain focussed on representing our club and community in the right way.”

Chew Magna FC has not commented on the decision.

Meanwhile, Axbridge United are on the lookout for a new reserve team manager after former boss, Freddy Bell Simmonds, stood down.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his hard work, dedication, and commitment to the club during his time in charge,” the club said.

“His efforts both on and off the pitch have been hugely appreciated by everyone involved with Axbridge United.

“With that said, we’re now on the lookout for someone to step up and take on the role of Reserve Team Manager. If you’re interested in getting involved and want to be part of the club, drop us a message — we’d love to hear from you.”
