Have your say over public dog rules covering former Mendip district

PEOPLE are being urged to have their say over rules concerning dogs in public places in the former Mendip district.

Somerset Council has launched a consultation over the renewal of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for dog control in Somerset East – the area formerly covered by Mendip District Council.

If approved, the renewal would see rules over dog fouling, keeping dogs on leads and the banning of dogs from play areas for children under five.

The previous PSPO covering the area lapsed in July last year, and could be reintroduced once the consultation is completed, on February 17.

PSPOs govern behaviour in public spaces, such as parks and play areas, with fines and more for those found to be in breach under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

For more information, and to take part in the consultation, visit somersetcouncil.citizenspace.com/comms/public-space-protection-order-consultation-se. Paper copies can be requested by calling 0300 123 2224 to arrange a postal delivery.

We are lucky enough to have amazing wildlife in Frome such as beavers and otters. Unfortunately some people allow their dogs off the lead to chase and scare this wildlife (protected by law) along with other animals such as the cows at Whatcombe Fields. It would be good to somehow enforce dogs on leads in these particular areas. Beavers in particular are defensive over their young when they are born (between April and July) and these people would be the first to complain if they acted defensively towards their dog. It would be good to warn people with signage and advertising before these months. Many thanks for allowing us input!

Rather than making life ever more difficult for dog owners, why not put more effort into stopping litter, anti-social behaviour, illegal parking, light pollution and fly-tipping?
