GLASTONBURY Sea Cadets could soon have a new home – if plans are approved.
Orme, on behalf of Glastonbury Sea Cadets, has submitted plans to Somerset Council to replace the existing building and container off Benedict Street.
The cadets currently lease the single-storey building from Tor Leisure Centre, which was fenced off in 2006 for “safety purposes”.
“The existing building is of poor condition, with very limited internal space for the activities taking place.
Therefore, the proposal is to replace the building to provide better facilities and services for the local community,” the application said.

As well as a replacement hall for the cadets, a garage would be built on the site to accommodate a minibus and trailer.
“The proposal will benefit the community by providing a safe and suitable space for children to play and learn,” it went on.
“By increasing the amount of functional space, it also allows for more sea cadets to enrol.”

The new building would have almost double the floorspace of the current structure – 330 sq m compared to the current 157 sq m – laid out in a T shape.
“The larger classrooms and galley will be located on the eastern wing, where they’ll have views out into the garden spaces to the north and south,” the plans said.
“These will be separated by bifold doors, creating flexible spaces to suit a variety of different uses.
“The main deck (hall) is located within the south wing to allow activities to spill outside and also access the galley (kitchen) during functions and events.”

It would be constructed using corrugated grey steel and timber cladding and brick, with a corrugated steel roof and powder coated black aluminium windows and doors.
Parking would be on hardstanding on the site, with entry and exit routes unchanged.
Somerset Council planners will now consider the proposal. For more details, and to comment on the plans, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 2026/0098/FUL.
