Former Somerset council HQ to re-open as library and more next week

THE former home of West Somerset Council will re-open this month – as a library, registration office and customer access point for services, including health visitors.

West Somerset House, in Killick Way, Williton, closed in December for refurbishment and will welcome visitors again from Wednesday, June 25.

It was formerly the HQ for West Somerset Council, which was abolished following the creation of the Somerset West & Taunton Council in 2019, and ultimately the unitary Somerset Council in April 2023.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, executive member for communities, housing and culture, said: “By bringing the library, Customer Access Point and other services together under one roof, we’re creating a hub where people can access vital services, get support, and connect with their community in a refreshed, modern environment.

“We want everyone to feel confident using digital services, and our Customer Access Points are designed to make that process straightforward and accessible.”

Due to the move to West Somerset House, Williton Library will close today (June 16), with the health visitors moving from the Children’s Centre at the end of the week.

There will be no access to either Williton Library or the Customer Access Point until the reopening on June 25. Customers should instead call 0300 123 2224 or visit the council website.

Meanwhile, there will no longer be a formal Customer Reception at West Somerset House, with a new Customer Access Point in Williton Library instead available.

If a customer has a complex question or issue, they can use the Video Assistance Link (VAL) to connect to a Customer Service Specialist who will be able to assist.

The VAL will be available between 9am to 4pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Customers will also be able to take documents that can be digitally uploaded and sent to the appropriate Somerset Council team.
