Firefighters tackle bio-mass boiler fire near Shepton Mallet that threatened house

A BIO-MASS boiler fire destroyed an outbuilding at a property near Shepton Mallet.

Firefighters were sent to the scene, in Doulting, at just after 9.30am this morning (January 25).

A member of the public reported a fire in the outbuilding, with crews from Shepton Mallet and Castle Cary sent to the scene.

“While still on the call, the caller stated the outbuilding was in close vicinity to the main house, so the decision was made by control to send an additional appliance from Glastonbury, alongside a supporting officer,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“Once in attendance, crews confirmed one outbuilding (was) well alight and were at work using one hose reel jet to prevent the fire from spreading.

“A short while later, crews confirmed they were at work using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and were using a light portable pump to withdraw water from a nearby watercourse.”

They said the fire involved a bio-mass boiler in an outbuilding that measured around 3m by 2.5m, which had “spread into the roof structure” and caused “significant damage to the boiler and outbuilding”.
