Dozens of firefighters tackle blaze at Stoney Stratton house

DOZENS of firefighters battled a blaze at a house in Stoney Stratton on Sunday morning (May 11).

Crews from across Somerset – including Taunton, Bridgwater, Glastonbury, Street, Wellington, Yeovil, Castle Cary, Cheddar, Frome, Martock, Shepton Mallet, Somerton, Wells and Wincanton – were sent to the property at around 11.51am.

“The first fire engine arriving reported smoke issuing but all persons were accounted for,” said a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

After locating the source of the fire, crews requested an aerial ladder platform and water bowser to help tackle the blaze, while the Incident Command Unit was also mobilised.

A sprayable liquid fire blanket, which assists with blocking power to PV panels to prevent electrical generation, was used by the crews, while the National Grid were also requested to attend.

At the height of the blaze, eight pumps were on the scene, with residents told to shut doors and windows.

“The Environment Agency were made of aware of the incident along with other agencies including Bristol Water and Avon & Somerset Police,” the spokesperson said.

By around 4.30pm, crews were “carrying out internal and external firefighting removing the tin roof”, while “salvaging items from the property”.

A total of 30 crews were involved, with “steady progress” being made in extinguishing the fire.

“This is confirmed as one detached residential property of timber clad construction over two storeys measuring 25m x 15m,” the spokesperson added.

“The ground floor, first floor and roof are 50% damaged by fire and 100% damaged by smoke.”

Crews remain at the scene this morning (May 12).
