A COMBINE harvester was destroyed by fire in a field near Wellington.
Firefighters from Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington were sent to the scene, in Langford Budville, at just before 7.30pm last night (July 29) after reports of a vehicle blaze.
“Two fire engines and a water bowser were mobilised following a call reporting a combine harvester on fire in a field,” a Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
“Upon arrival, they requested one more fire engine, as the fire had spread to the field.”
Crews used three breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one fog spike, one thermal image camera, beaters and a triple extension ladder to tackle the fire.
“The combine harvester was 100% damaged by fire,” the spokesperson added. “The incident was helped by the farmer creating a fire break in the field to prevent the fire spreading further.
“The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.”
