Chemical leak at property near Bridgwater prompts emergency response

EMERGENCY services were called to reports of a chemical leak at a property near Bridgwater last night (July 31).

Firefighters from Bridgwater and Nether Stowey, along with an environmental protection unit from Taunton, were sent to the scene at around 6.50pm.

A Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the call involved a “liquid ammonia leak within a contained building”.

“More breathing apparatus was required to assist the crews so they requested another two fire engines attend for that reason – these were sent from Bridgwater and Burnham on Sea,” they added.

The crews worked alongside an expert, using breathing apparatus, to isolate the leak and make the leaking vessel safe.

The incident was deemed under control by around 11.30pm.
