BRIDGWATER will host a peace conference ahead of American nuclear weapons returning to the British mainland.
The event, on March 5, opposes the proposal to store US nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.
Organised by the Bridgwater Peace Group (BPG), it will feature guest speeches from Dr Rowland Dye, a lecturer with a PhD in nuclear physics, and Lyn Barlow, a textile artist and activist.
Dr Dye said: “Nuclear weapons are not a weapon of last resort, they are not insurance, they are an obscenely brutal weapon used to threaten the rest of the world.”
Following prolonged protests, US nuclear weapons were removed from RAF Lakenheath 15 years ago.
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) said the storage of these nuclear weapons at Lakenheath makes the UK a forward nuclear base for the US.
The BPG said with global tensions destabilising, the move puts the UK at the frontline of a NATO/ Russian war, emphasising the Kremlin’s description of the storage decision as an “escalation”.
The event will take place on Tuesday, March 5 at 7pm, at Bridgwater Railway Club.
It is free with an optional contribution to the BPG.

So if we did go to war, you can guarantee he would be a conscientious objector. Wants to live in this country, but unwilling to fight to defend it. We should be rearming, and putting the process of conscription in place. Better to be prepared, than left wanting. Putin is not going to stop if he wins in the Ukraine.
