GILL Brown – a dedicated charity fundraiser from Bridgwater – has passed away at the age of 81.
Mrs Brown was awarded a Pride of Britain Award last year for her efforts in raising more than £500,000 for Children’s Hospice south West (CHSW) over almost 20 years.
She was described by the charity as “the quiet force behind thousands of collections, events, and bucket shakes in support of CHSW” for her efforts, alongside husband, Stuart.
“Her tireless efforts have brought communities together to support babies, children, and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families, ensuring they receive vital care, comfort, and dignity,” the charity said when her Pride of Britain Award was announced.
However, in the background, she was living with a terminal cancer diagnosis – but refused to let it slow her down.
“In fact, just two days after major surgery, she was already on the phone to the team at CHSW’s local hospice, Charlton Farm in Wraxall, asking how she could help next,” CHSW said.
At the time, Gill said: “Health professionals told my family they didn’t think I would make it. But I told them, look at me, I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere. I’ve got work to do.”
She passed away on December 31 at home, with her family around her and a tribute said she will be “sadly missed by all her family and many friends”.
A funeral service is planned at Sedgemoor Crematorium on January 23, from 1pm. Donations are being accepted in lieu of flowers for CHSW via www.hbiffen.co.uk, or sent to H Biffen & Sons Ltd, 32 Wembdon Road, Bridgwater.
