Traffic lights and closures during roadworks set to start on North Somerset route this month

A SERIES of road closures and temporary traffic lights will be installed during major roadworks in North Somerset.

Works are set to begin in West Town Road, Backwell, on March 16, running until June 26 in a series of phases stretching from the junction with Rushmoor Grove to the junction with Fairfield Way.

As part of the works, the A370 will be closed between 7am and 7pm on April 13 until April 17, with a night-time closure running between June 15 and 26.

North Somerset Council said diversions will be put in place and advised motorists to leave extra time for their journeys.

The roadworks will include renewing drainage systems, resurfacing, repairing and replacing ironworks, refreshing road markings and signs, clearing vegetation, installing new bus-priority traffic lights, a new pedestrian crossing and a 20mph speed limit.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, NSC Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “This is an important and much needed programme of works for Backwell, and I’m pleased to see it moving forward.

“These improvements will not only enhance the condition and safety of West Town Road but will also support our wider commitment to creating a thriving and sustainable district. By maintaining highway drainage apparatus, improving crossings, and introducing a new 20mph zone, we’re helping to create safer, greener and more resilient neighbourhoods for residents, businesses and all road users.”
