TRAFFIC: Lane of M5 closed after crash and Shepton route closed due to snow

A LANE of the M5 was closed after a crash this morning which saw a person trapped in a vehicle after it left the carriageway and hit a hedge.

National Highways said traffic was ‘coping well’ after the incident, on the northbound carriageway between junctions 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and 21 (Weston-super-Mare).

It is understood the incident occurred at around 5.45am.

Firefighters from Bridgwater and Burnham were sent to the scene and a spokesperson said: “Shortly after booking in attendance, crew confirmed that there was one person still within the vehicle which had left the carriageway and collided with a hedge.

“The person within the vehicle was successfully rescued by crew using hydraulic cutting spreaders, V-Struts and a triple extension ladder.

“The driver of the vehicle was left in the care of the ambulance service.”

Elsewhere in Somerset, several roads are closed due to flooding after the recent heavy rainfall and snow.

The A361 near Shepton Mallet is ‘impassable’ in both directions due to snow between the A37 Whitstone Road (Charlton Crossroads, Shepton Mallet) and the B3092 (Feltham).
