Roadworks set to start on route to Hinkley Point C around Cannington

ROADWORKS are set to start on a major route to the Hinkley Point C site next week – lasting around a month.

Somerset Council’s Highways Team is resurfacing sections of the C182, between the entrance to the plant and the Cannington Roundabout.

Heidelberg Materials is set to start work on Monday (September 23) and the scheme is expected to be complete on Tuesday, October 26.

Work will be at night between 7pm and 5am, with the road closed for each phase. However, access will be maintained for residents and businesses.

The work will be carried out in three phases:
• Week commencing September 23: Wick Lane to Cock Lane
• Week commencing October 7: Wick Lane to site entrance
• Week commencing October 14: Series of short sections between Monk Lane junction and Cannington roundabout

Lead member for transport and digital, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “This is a vital route for what is one of the biggest construction projects in Europe so it is really important that we carry out this essential maintenance to safeguard the life span of the road for both business traffic and for local residents.

“We have worked closely with the team at Hinkley Point C to ensure the scheme is delivered as quickly as possible to minimise disruption for residents on the route and the plant traffic.”
