Road closure warning during ‘major’ work on busy North Somerset route

MAJOR work to resurface a main North Somerset road – as well as installing a 20mph speed limit – are set to get underway, with drivers being warned the route will close.

Resurfacing works will get started on the B3133 Brinsea Road and the High Street in Congresbury on Monday (July 14), North Somerset Council (NSC) said, with completion estimated 11 days later, excluding weekends.

The works will see the route closed from 7pm until 5am from the junction of the A370 Station Road to the junction with Silver Street, with the project starting at the northern end of the High Street, progressing southwards towards Brinsea Road.

Traffic calming measures will be installed, alongside the reduced speed limit – from 30mph to 20mph – including a raised flat-top hump at the existing zebra crossing near Congresbury precinct, and additional speed cushions along Brinsea Road.

New, 20mph speed limit signs will be installed on the majority of roads in Congresbury.

On the first night only (Monday 14 July), resurfacing will begin at the A370 Station Road junction, with temporary traffic signals being put in place at the junction that night.

Yellow cones will be put in place to prevent people parking in the area being worked on.

Cllr Hannah Young, NSC cabinet member with responsibility for highways and sustainable travel, said: “This is a very busy road and there has been concern by the local community about the speed of traffic using this route.

“We are committed to encouraging sustainable travel and want to make this road a safer environment for all road users.

“We are taking the opportunity to introduce a 20mph safety scheme while the road is being resurfaced to minimise disruption for residents and road users.

“We appreciate that the series of utilities works within Congresbury have been difficult for residents and these will cause some further disruption, but this is a highly efficient use of the road closure and will avoid additional future inconvenience.”

The news comes after drivers were warned of a lane closure in Weston-Super-Mare while work to trim willow trees takes place over three days next week.
