THREE people were checked over by medics and a busy Somerset route closed after an oil tanker leak this morning (September 25).
The incident unfolded on the A37 near Chelwood at around 8am, police said, with the road expected to be closed “for a signifiant part of the day”.
A three-vehicle crash occurred following the spill, with people injured, though not seriously.
“We would ask drivers to avoid the scene and follow marked diversions, which are in place at the Chelwood roundabout on the A37,” an Avon & Somerset spokesperson said.
“A full closure is in place between the A37 junction with the B3130 and the turn off for Birchwood Lane.
“Police are at the scene, and the road is likely to be closed for a significant part of the day so a deep clean can be carried out.
“Following the oil spill, a three-vehicle collision occurred. Three people sustained injuries not believed to be serious and have been assessed at the scene.”

Contractors report at 10:00 pm tonight that complete resurfacing work of the A37 road is required to renew the surface road traction and make safe . The emergency contractors have been brought in today from far afield to attend A37 resurfacing and to manage the traffic. A37 MAY be open again on Saturday 27th if the resurfacing work goes well overnight and tommorrow ( Friday 26th )
Chaos on local roads for most of the day occurred with diverting wagons trying to make deliveries then getting wedged on narrow lanes, and those “cant do reverse ” car and van drivers ( of which there seem to be more and more bad drivers) in a log jamb, on local single track roads. ” local residents report drivers who choose to navigate lanes at any time should be able to reverse their vehicles and predict and log in their minds previous passing places and be prepared to go back to them if required, ” and adds “problem is there are so many drivers out there who do not appear to be spacially aware of their vehicle size, unaware of their surroundings , and simply unfamiliar of what steps to take to get the traffic moving, so when two streams of vehicles meet from different directions on a narrow country lane the drivers simply are unable to manage the situation , the standard of driving has certainly gone down”
