New signs in Bridgwater aim to cut town centre traffic

NEW signs are set to be installed urging HGV drivers to use an alternative route into and through Bridgwater – and cut traffic.

Bridgwater Town Council (BTC) is investigating how signs could work – and how much they would cost – in the Taunton Road and Broadway areas encouraging large vehicles to use Squibbers Way rather than Taunton Road.

Cllr Tim Mander, chair of the Transport Forum, said: “The town council was approached by a resident of Taunton Road who felt more could be done to encourage heavy goods vehicles to use Squibbers Way rather than Taunton Road.

“The Transport Forum supported the idea and a productive meeting was held with an officer from Somerset Highways.

“While we now await some more detailed proposals, the initial cost estimate was certainly within the bounds of affordability.

“The final scheme will of course go back to full Council, but what is proposed is about changing the habits of HGV drivers, not about restricting domestic vehicles.”

The proposal forms part of BTC’s commitment to improve traffic flow and safety in Bridgwater.

Squibbers Way was designed as a strategic route for larger vehicles, with more details of the new signs, including costings and design proposals, set to be considered in the New Year before any final decision is made.

Has anyone on this committee held a HGV . And where do these large vehicles go when they reach the Lime Kiln end of Colley Way.

This is a very welcome and really important step in encouraging better use of Squibbers way to divert hgv’s especially away from heavy traffic and narrower roads like Taunton Road leading to a safer and quieter outcome for residents , pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles. I fully support this idea and thank the Taunton Road resident ‘s suggestion and Bridgwater Town Council for hopefully making this happen.

Once again the idiots in Bridgwater at their best!! They think a sign directing articulated lorries past the Lime Kiln pub will solve the Taunton road congestion.
Never driven an artic have they? Or maybe asked a couple of drivers why they don’t already use the fatally flawed useless road!!
It beggars belief. Well not really.
