Major roadworks on A370 in Weston begin tonight: Here’s when the road is closed

ROAD closures on a busy Weston-super-Mare route begin tonight (October 20) as a series of major roadworks get underway.

Key sections of the A370 begin today, with the road closed from 8pm until 6am on weekdays until November 1.

North Somerset Council (NSC) said the closures will allow “essential upgrades” to the A370 in a bid to “ensure the road continues to serve motorists safely and efficiently for years to come”.

The programme includes a mix of resurfacing, patching and preventative maintenance across several stretches.

Road closures on the A370 in Weston-Super-Mare for roadworks:

October 20 to November 1, between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, A370 Somerset Avenue (West Wick Roundabout to Hutton Moor Roundabout) including the Airport Roundabout for:

  • Extensive carriageway patching on Somerset Avenue and Flowerdown Bridge
  • Full resurfacing of the Airport Roundabout and all entry and exit roads
  • Cut back overgrown vegetation on verges and central reservations
  • Conduct litter picking along the verges
  • Apply joint sealant to treat cracks and prevent future deterioration
  • Empty roadside drainage gullies to improve water run-off

A370 Herluin Way (Winterstoke Roundabout to Hutton Moor Roundabout):

Road closures between 8pm and 6pm westbound (inbound) between November 3 and 7, and eastbound (outbound) between November 10 and 15 for:

  • Extensive patching on the dual carriageway
  • Traffic signal upgrading
  • Joint sealing works to prevent further deterioration
  • Tree coppicing near the Hutton Moor Road junction
  • Replacement of high-friction surfacing at pedestrian crossings near Carbase and the Hutton Moor junction – enhancing grip and improving safety, especially in wet conditions
  • Vegetation clearance, litter picking, and gully emptying

Traffic marshals will be on hand to help with access arrangements and a clear diversion route will be in place.

Cllr Hannah Young, NSC cabinet member for roads, said: “We appreciate there is a lot of work going on in Weston at the moment and this is increasing some journey times.

“We are investing heavily in improvements to public transport, bridge structures and the general condition of our roads and this may be causing some delays.”

She added: “These works represent a significant investment in the town’s road infrastructure—helping to keep Weston’s transport network safe, efficient and well-maintained.

“Many of these projects can only be taken forward when we secure national grant funds to complete them, which means that we cannot always avoid works happening at similar times.

“While temporary disruption is unavoidable, every effort is being made to minimise inconvenience, and the improvements will soon provide long-lasting benefits for all who travel on this vital route.”
