WORK to upgrade a busy North Somerset junction is set to get underway on Monday (October 6) – with a series of lane and road closures and temporary traffic lights to be installed.
The B3440 Bristol Road junction in Worle is being upgraded to improve traffic flow, including for buses, with this part of the scheme running in phases until the middle of December.
During the works, temporary traffic management is planned as follows:
- Lane closure on Bristol Road, from the exit of the A370 to Shepherds Way. This phase of the works will start on October 6 and will take around one month.
- Narrow lanes and off-peak temporary traffic signals on Bristol Road, from Shepherds Way to the entry to the A370. This phase of the work will start in early November and take around one month.
- Full overnight closures of Bristol Road, from Shepherds Way to and from the A370. This phase of the works will start in early December and take approximately two weeks.
Dates are subject to change due to weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances, North Somerset Council (NSC) said.

To minimise disruption, we are using lane closures rather than road closures wherever possible, with full closures set to take place overnight, to allow for resurfacing and repairs to the road.
The bus lane inbound towards the Queensway roundabouts will not be operational until after the works complete at the Queensway/Walford Avenue/Bristol Road junctions, which will begin early 2026 and complete early 2027.
Georges Turn bus stop, on the B3440 heading towards Worle, will be moved 100 metres down the road, to a temporary location on the B3440 bridge above the A370.
“We have scheduled this work in phases to reduce disruption as much as possible for road users, opting for lane closures and brief overnight road closures,” an NSC spokesperson said.
“We ask for your patience and co-operation whilst we carry out this important work to this key junction.”
Future phases of the project will see the two traffic light-controlled junctions between the Queensway and Walford Avenue, and Bristol Road and the B3440, converted into two connected roundabouts.
Small changes are also planned for two roundabouts on New Bristol Road, to improve traffic flow – the Victory (at the entrance to the Sainsbury’s trading estate), and by the Summerhouse pub.
The works at Queensway are part of bigger improvements for the A370 corridor, including:
- 150 upgraded bus stops and shelters
- New transport hubs, which include more comfortable seating and Real Time Information points to see when buses are arriving
- Improved fares and more reliable journeys

Why don’t you finish more jobs you started like stowey road yaton junctions with well lane and cherry Grove where 20 mph pedestrian signs start and finish road priority markings we’re supposed to be finished when high street road markings we’re done ..it’s obviously that this was an oversight as 3 major accidents have happened on this junction and speed limits not adhered to ..?????? Why ? The press will get informed as its not to plans introduced by north Somerset Council….
